Meningitis

Both bacteria and viruses may cause meningitis, an acute life-threatening disease that occurs in epidemics and has killed large numbers of children.

A blinding headache, nausea, severe neck stiffness (especially on bending the neck forward), and sensitivity to light (photophobia), coming on very suddenly, can all be symptoms of meningitis. There may also be an angry red skin rash, and in babies the fontanelle (soft spot on the top of the head) may become raised and taut.

Treatment

Bacterial meningitis needs prompt conventional medical attention and will be treated with large doses of antibiotics. These will wipe out both the good and bad bacteria that occur naturally in our bodies, and this, in turn, can lead to the growth of fungal infections that those bacteria normally keep in check. During convalescence, alternative therapies can be helpful.

Viral meningitis usually needs no treatment, but complementary therapies, used after the condition has setded, will have a restorative effect and encourage quicker rehabilitation.
